âI canât stay awake.â
Kane motions for Murphy to join me on the bed. Heâs been more flexible on Murphy being on the bed since Iâve been around. I think itâs sweet.
âYou need to sleep,â Kane whispers in my ear. He kisses my cheek and fusses with the bedding. The drive to his house was bumpier than either of us was comfortable with, but now that Iâm tucked into bed with Murphy on one side and Kane on the other, Iâm starting to feel better already.
Iâm just so damn tired.
âI guess I could use a nap.â
âYou canât keep your eyes open, and thatâs the truth of it,â he says. âWould you like for me to turn on a movie for you?â
âSure.â
Murphy can watch it. Because Iâm pretty sure Iâm about to be comatose.
âWhat would you like to watch?â
âWhile You Were Sleeping.â
It seems appropriate. I love that film. Kane silently pushes buttons on the remote, and before I know it, I can hear the opening music for the movie.
âIâll be right downstairs, darling.â Kane kisses my forehead. âIf you need me, just call out or text, okay?â
âMm.â
He leaves the room, and I open one eye so I can look over at Murphy, whoâs laid his chin on my good arm, watching me closely.
âI always wanted a dog to watch over me.â My words are slurred from exhaustion and medication. âIâm glad itâs you. Youâre the best dog ever.â
Murphy yawns, and just as the man in the movie falls from the platform to the tracks below, I feel myself slip into sleep.
âI donât want to.â
âWhy? Donât be silly. Just get in the boat.â
I shake my head, looking at the choppy water around us. I donât even know who the person is that Iâm with, but I do know that if I get in that boat, Iâll be super seasick. I donât want to be miserable.
I donât want to throw up.
âIâm not going.â
âGet in the fucking boat.â
âNo.â
âIâll put you there myself.â
Iâm lifted into the air, and itâs all in slow-motion. Thereâs so much water under us, slapping against the side of the tiny boat. It scares me. I want to go home.
âLet me out.â
âShh.â
I open my eyes and find both Kane and Murphy staring down at me.
âYou were dreaming,â Kane says.
âYeah, it was a shitty dream.â
I scowl as I try to sit up, and my shoulder sings in pain.
âEasy, darling,â Kane says, helping me up and fluffing pillows behind my back. Once he gets me situated, I notice a tray sitting on the end of the bed, and realize my stomach is trying to eat itself.
âIs that for me?â I ask.
âI thought weâd eat in bed tonight,â he says with a smile and motions for Murphy to get off the bed, which he does. But he doesnât go far, likely hoping for a handout or two.
âWhat did you bring me?â
âMy mum made some stew, which is full of vegetables but should be easy on your stomach. She made homemade bread, as well.â
âDid she do this for me?â
âNo.
